Studying Music Composition

yhlee asked, "D00d! What's it like to study music composition?" I'll give a quick rundown of my own experience here.

I studied at Jacksonville University from fall 1974 through spring 1978, ending up with a BM in Composition and Electronic Music (or something like that). The "BM" stands for Bachelor of Music (not Medicine) and is closer to a conservatory-type degree than is the BA in Music or even the BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts). There were 4 of us composition majors graduating together; amazingly, this was about 1% of the University-wide graduating class. I suspect all us of had different experiences, none of them bad, however. A brief mention of the others:
